This isn’t a political post, the world doesn’t need that right now.
Today I laughed and today I cried.
I cried because I was buried under an avalanche of responsibilities and assignments. I had a timer set on my phone to remind me to take a break to eat and I’ve had to rearrange my schedule just to have time to shower. I cried because a video project malfunctioned and I couldn’t pass the class without it. I’m stressed, I’m tired, and I’m worn down. Then I walked out of class to see a massive and slightly violent protest happening on campus and I cried for the disunity that our country is in.
Today I laughed.
I laughed because I was able to get my project fixed with the help of an amazing teacher and mentor (and it was an easy fix). I laughed because my friends are some of the kindest and funniest people you’ll ever be lucky to meet. I laughed because my boyfriend knew I was having a bad day and sent me funny pictures. I laughed because I got to go home and watch the movie “Mean Girls” with my roommate while eating ice-cream.
This world will never be in peace, it’s just not attainable. No matter how awful that feels or sounds, there is nothing you can do about it. What you can do however is laugh, and cry. You can wake up with the goal to do good in the world (and I encourage you to). You can’t ignore the awful things going on in the world, that’s too much laughing. You can’t dwell on them and let them diminish your spirit, that’s too much crying.
I hope you laugh and cry. I hope you understand the harsh reality that this world is in but I also hope you don’t let it ever break your spirit. So, it’s ok to be sad, that’s perfectly understandable. But, do me a favor and don’t forget to laugh while you’re crying.
Hug a friend, feel positivity radiating from them, embrace their compassion, and most importantly, laugh.
Breathe, do good in the world, share kindness, take care of yourself, and don’t forget to laugh and cry.
